DAPP THEORY Y'all Just Don't Know (Concord) Pianist Andy Milne, a one-time Hogtowner, leads his Dapp Theory (don't ask) group into invigorating territory here with the rhythmic experiments of M-base and hip-hop blending with chilling grooves and more than a dash of social protest. The latter comes courtesy of folk-rocker Bruce Cockburn and rapper Kokayi. The former's disturbing lyrics on "Trickle Down," "Everywhere Dance" and "Bad Air" crackle with anger, right up-to-date for 2003. Kokayi's contribution to five of the 11 items is less effective, since the full-decibel rap on "Only Clave" and "Bermuda Triangle" subverts the tricky, tasty sounds served up by the boss, Gregoire Maret on harmonica, electric bassist Rich Brown and drummer Sean Rickman. Milne originals like the stutter-step "Neoparadeigma," the mellow "Patterns Of Force" and "Why 2 K?" with fierce keyboards and clattering percussion overflow with interest, though there's still as much melody as groove. One bonus is a cool spin of Dizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma."
