Y'all Just Don't Know could serve, in addition to
an album title, as Dapp Theory's response to people who can't grasp their
music. It was released on Concord, a reputable jazz label whose roster has
included Rosemary Clooney, Ray Charles and Karrin Allyson. Releasing Dapp
Theory shows a courageous leap for Concord, as the group blends pianist
Andy Milne's funky, odd time signature jazz with raps from the poetic MC
Kokayi and folk singer Bruce Cockburn, sometimes in the same song. Both
guests buck expectations by contributing lyrics that flow like more like
jazz solos than standard 4/4 rhymes. Their subject matter actually
inspired the album title: On it, they sing about how people don't grasp
social injustices that affect them on a daily basis. Milne started the
group after playing with Five Elements, the group led by saxophonist Steve
Coleman that took a unique approach to electric jazz and funk. The pianist
said in a recent issue of JazzTimes that he listened to jazz before
he got into funk and hip-hop, but the group's members -- which also
include a harmonica player -- bring all sorts of elements to bear on the
music.
